Our speaker on Monday, March 29, was Corey Hirsch, former NHL goalie and now mental health advocate.  We watched a taped video of his presentation to the Shuswap Youth Launch  on the subject of mental health and his own personal struggles.
Corey spoke of his journey through the trauma of  confusion, embarrassment and shame in the early days of his hockey career until he finally had to admit that he couldn't cope anymore and needed to seek help.  He outlined and explained the steps to recovery; they include exercise, healthy eating and sleep, time out from technology, writing or journaling, and medication.  He especially  emphasized the importance of connecting with others and talking to someone you trust, including a therapist.  Mental health is a marathon, not a sprint.
